Fühlinger See: Garbage chaos at the P2 parking lot – A call for cleanliness!

It's getting really hot at Lake Fühlinger and in the surrounding Cologne parks - and therefore dirty. Reader reporter Sebastian Mertens imagined the wonderful summer days a little differently. Instead of the longed-for bathing pleasure, it is the remains of incorrigible guests that bitterly fall victim to the current state of the popular refuges for peace and relaxation. In his report express.de he vents his displeasure and highlights what he has documented in the last few weeks.

What particularly catches the eye is the P2 parking lot at Fühlinger See, which is in a sad state. Mertens describes how food leftovers, garbage bags, bags of feces and a variety of wet wipes spoil the place. “That’s a disgrace,” says Mertens, because all the rubbish lying there is not new; in some cases it has even remained there for more than ten days. The question arises: Where is the cleaning?

Littering as a summer phenomenon

It turns out again and again that summer brings not only sunshine, but also garbage. Mertens reports on the general tendency towards littering every year, which can be observed not only at Lake Fühlinger, but also in other Cologne parks and along the Rhine. Despite the regular presence of employees from the waste management company (AWB) and the public order office, the problem remains unsolved. For many, the question is, how much longer?

To combat the waste problem, the AWB offers on its website www.awbkoeln.de an uncomplicated way to query street pick-up times and to easily order bulky waste. The new digital waste and recyclables calendar, which is also available as a PDF, is intended to help reduce paper consumption and protect the environment. As an additional benefit, citizens can easily access important collection dates and information about hazardous waste and green waste.

A call to responsibility

The situation at Fühlinger See shows that the lack of consideration has developed into an urgent problem. Mertens calls on all Cologne residents to not only show a good hand in enjoying nature, but also in caring for it. Ultimately, everyone benefits from a clean environment that invites you to linger and relax. Community is the key to a clean and welcoming environment for all Cologne residents. It's high time: let's get it done!

The city and the AWB are required to take clearer measures to keep the places that people like to visit in the summer in a clean condition. It remains to be hoped that the situation will improve soon so that Lake Fühlinger remains a place where you can swim with a clear conscience.
