Ehrenfeld's largest shared apartment: 92 young people experience community and music!
In Ehrenfeld, a vibrant district of Cologne, a community of 92 young people under the age of 30 live in a unique residential project that impresses not only with its size, but above all with its spirit. Their home is a renovated house on Piusstrasse that once served as a student dormitory and was run by an organization close to Opus Dei. Today it is managed by the Achim Wunderlich construction company and has developed into a dazzling example of the modern co-living concept. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger emphasizes that community is important here: residents cook together in eight common rooms, organize barbecues and sustainable flea markets.
In recent years, coliving – communal living – has gained popularity in Europe. These are modern shared apartments that are particularly attractive for young professionals and digital nomads. Housing Anywhere describes that the trend offers flexibility and comfort, with fully furnished apartments that make it possible to move in without much hassle. The 550 euro basic rent for a 12 square meter room in the Ehrenfeld project is not just a price for living space, but for an entire attitude to life.
Art and community: window concerts as part of life
In order to further strengthen the community spirit, the Cologne rapper Mary regularly organizes “window concerts” from his apartment. These are not just musical events, but also a platform to draw attention to injustices in the music business. At one of his appearances, he greeted around 100 listeners and passionately discussed his anger and its impact on his life. Eko Fresh, another supporter of the “WG & Co” project, appeared after Mary and performed the song “Orient Express”, which linked his roots in Sivas with his connection to Cologne. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reports that such concerts last up to two hours and can attract up to 250 listeners.
The founders of “WG & Co” demonstrated a good hand in selecting residents and conducted over 500 conversations to find a harmonious mix. The various common rooms, including a cinema and a co-working space, not only offer young adults space to live, but also create opportunities for creativity and personal development. Similar to the co-living concepts in Riga, where the focus is on self-expression and personal growth, this is a place that is both innovative and inspiring. SHED Co-Living in Riga has similar goals and encourages people to develop new relationships and ideas.
A look into the future
The success concept in Ehrenfeld shows that community and an inspiring environment are important factors for a fulfilling life. Given the increasing number of freelancers in Germany, which now number around 400,000, such a model could also become very popular in other cities. The construction company also plans to build another similar building in the future, which will provide open spaces for urban gardening to create even more space for community and collaboration. This is not only a sign of developments in the residential market, but also of the emergence of lively neighborhoods, which are increasingly in demand in urban centers.
