Rondorf in transition: residents defend themselves against the bypass!

Construction of the new unbundling road has begun in the Rondorf district of Cologne, a project that is intended to help ease traffic flow in the region in the future. With a total length of around five kilometers, including junctions and junctions, the road will play a central role in rerouting traffic. Traffic is currently routed through Rondorf, which is particularly concerning for residents on Kolberger Straße. They raise concerns about potential noise and speed issues once the bypass becomes operational. A speed of 70 km/h is under discussion, but whether this will actually be implemented is still unclear. The city of Cologne has viewed active noise protection measures as disproportionate, while passive noise protection measures must be retrofitted. This information comes from, among others ksta.de.

The new unbundling road will be connected via a distribution circle on Bödinger Straße in Rondorf and will enable a connection to the motorway towards Brühl, which has no longer been possible since April. The construction project is part of larger planning that began last January with preparatory work for a new residential area in Rondorf Nordwest. The road layout has been defined as “Variant H” since 2022 and includes a north-south axis. According to the Cologne district government, a planning approval process is already underway, which was applied for in February 2024, and a discussion date for residents will take place in November 2023.

Details about the construction project

The unbundling road will not only establish a connection to the Brühler Landstrasse, but various protective and compensatory measures will also be part of the construction project. The total length of the road will be 3.8 km, supplemented by around 1.0 km of reconstruction of connecting and crossing roads. It is particularly important to take environmental impacts into account, so that the city of Cologne also takes ecological aspects into account. All relevant planning documents can be viewed by citizens between November 25th and December 27th, 2024. The deadline for objections is January 27, 2025, as shown on bezreg-koeln.nrw.de is to be read.

Mobility in Cologne

The unbundling road is also part of a larger mobility plan “Better through Cologne”, which pursues sustainable solutions for traffic in the city. The plan was developed in two stages, with the first stage running from fall 2022 to March 2025. In April 2025, the Cologne Council adopted a strategy to improve the traffic situation in the city. From August 2025, the second stage will start with concrete measures and an implementation plan. This project represents a significant step in the mobility transition, so the city of Cologne has a good hand here. Further information on this is available opinionfor.koeln.

With the new construction project and the extensive mobility plan, Cologne shows that the city is actively working to improve the infrastructure and take the needs of its citizens into account.
