Grandma's kitchen returns: New in Cologne-Bayenthal! Feast like before!

A touch of nostalgia wafts through the newly opened “Gasthaus zur Oma” at Alteburger Straße 299 in Cologne-Bayenthal. After converting the former “Gasthaus zur Eule”, initiator Axel Brinkmann, an experienced restaurateur, created a charming opportunity to revive local cuisine. Its guests are offered the atmosphere of grandma's kitchen, where traditional home cooking is the focus. “I want to free people from their digital speechlessness and ensure that they sit together at the table again,” explains Brinkmann. This is supported by a team of four “grandmas” who are passionate about sharing their recipes.

On the opening day, the inn welcomed 47 guests who had registered online for the meal. A golden-brown breaded fish fillet with colorful potato salad landed on the plates, which delighted those present. Reservations are required for fixed time slots, between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., while dinner ends at 9:30 p.m. What is particularly worth emphasizing is that you have to fetch the drinks yourself - a concept that makes the visit a sociable experience.

The cooks of the inn

The chefs bring in a wide variety of culinary influences. Sabine Kolb, the youngest in the team, is 58 years old and conjures up a hearty goulash. Lida Weag, 63 years old and from the Czech Republic, spoils guests with her own potato salad recipes. And 81-year-old Monika Schorr surprises with Königsberger Klopse. The positive reception from the guests shows that the traditional food and family atmosphere at the “Gasthaus zur Oma” really hits the mark.

Reservations for a visit are made via the website www.omagerichte.de, and the meal costs between 22 and 26 euros. Particular emphasis is also placed on preventing food waste, which is why guests book their visit in advance. The inn is also looking for more “grandmas” for the kitchen who would like to share their recipes with others and keep the old charm of the place alive.

A look outside

While the “Gasthaus zur Oma” reinterprets local cuisine, the Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter also offers its own special features. The beer garden is open on weekends in June, July and August, ideal for a relaxing day outdoors. A forest festival awaits guests on September 1st, followed by an Oktoberfest from September 12th to 15th and September 19th to 21st. Reservations are also recommended here. The Bavarian Hunter Inn also features a fully equipped bar and a wide selection of drinks and food.

Both restaurants – the “Gasthaus zur Oma” and the Bavarian Hunter – help to bring the locality and its traditions into focus and promote exchange between people. As the “Gasthaus zur Oma” shows, it is important to promote such concepts in order to strengthen the community.

So if you're looking for a good piece of home but also some conviviality, you should plan a visit to one of these two fine restaurants!
