A large fire brigade operation caused a stir in the Meschenich district of Cologne on Sunday evening. At around 7:15 p.m., the fire department was alerted to a fire on the 15th floor of a high-rise residential building. Under the keyword “FIRE2 – human lives in danger,” 66 emergency services with 23 vehicles arrived to take care of the situation.
The fire broke out in an apartment in the hallway area when a couch burst into flames for unknown reasons. Despite the dramatic circumstances, the firefighters managed to act quickly. They reached the affected floor via the stairwells and were able to quickly extinguish the fire. However, when the apartment was searched it was found that no one was in danger, which relieved the team.
Injuries and evacuations
However, six residents of the high-rise suffered from smoke inhalation and were treated by emergency services. Four of them had to be taken to hospital. A total of four apartments have become uninhabitable due to the fire, making the situation particularly precarious for some residents.
The fire department kept the situation under control and also checked the two floors above the fire to ensure that no other people were threatened. The entire operation lasted around two hours and was declared over at around 9:20 p.m. The police have now started investigating the cause of the fire.
