Zündorf is fighting for the historic teahouse: citizens are resisting!

The planned renovation on the Groov-Ufer in Zündorf is causing a lot of discussion in the community. The city of Cologne has announced that it will demolish the historic tea house on the northern Groov pond, which has sparked great resistance among the population. Many Zündorf residents are determined to preserve the teahouse, which has a deep-rooted history and once belonged to the Immendorf brewery family, which was built after a tragic incident. Initiatives such as an online petition by Michaela Foerster have already collected over 1,200 signatures to demand the preservation of the structure in a community that has almost 12,000 residents. These efforts are also encouraging citizens to raise their voices loudly, as KSTA reports.

However, the city administration sees no way to preserve the teahouse as part of bank protection, as this is not possible due to the urgent need for action. The LVR Office for Monument Preservation in the Rhineland also supports this point of view. Nevertheless, politicians from the Porzer CDU and the Greens have submitted a proposal to save the tea house, which calls for both the preservation of the house and the construction of a replacement that is true to the original. Andreas Bischoff from the CDU has promised technical options for securing the tea house. An inspection of the files was requested in order to achieve an independent reassessment in terms of monument preservation.

Renovation work and environmental measures

But it's not just the teahouse that's in focus; the ponds at Zündorfer Groov will also be renovated in the near future. The city has made available 187,000 euros to respond to the express wishes of citizens who find the water situation threatening. According to Porzer Leben, work should begin this year. These measures include, among other things, the installation of pumps to improve water quality and the creation of a belt of reeds and rushes in the upper pond, which is supplied with a solar pump. The inlet in the groundwater inlet area will also be increased to achieve better water movement.

The idea behind these restoration works goes beyond simply improving water quality. It is also part of a larger urban preservation program aimed at preserving historic city centers and creating vibrant places to live and work that attract both tourists and local businesses. As städtebaufoerderung.info explains, the preservation of such historical ensembles is an important goal that can strengthen the local economy.

Another interesting corner of the issue is the proposed removal of a weeping willow next to the teahouse, with the city assuring that new planting is secured. Despite the unrest among residents and the difficult decisions that need to be made, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop. According to the authorities, a sudden demolition of the tea house is not expected, which gives the citizens a small glimmer of hope.
