Visit to the aerospace center: high goals for NRW!
Köln-Wahn, Deutschland - On June 8, 2025, the Hösel culture group visited the German Air and Space Center in Cologne-Wahn. The aim of this exciting excursion was to underline the importance of the center as the linchpin for technology and scientific research in the region. In more than three hours, the members of the cultural group received a comprehensive insight into the versatile activities and research of the center.
A real highlight was the impressive presentation about the international space station ISS. This hovers at a height of about 400 kilometers above the earth and circles our planet at a rapid speed of 28,000 km/h - a whopping 16 rounds a day! The ISS is not only a place of research, it also helps to understand the effects of weightlessness on the human body and at the same time provides valuable information about our earth and the universe.
training for the stars
Another interesting point of the visit was the idea of the comprehensive preparation, the astronauts for their missions on the ISS. This not only includes training in weightlessness, but also medical and psychological tests. The scientists prepare for very specific challenges, since each astronaut is trained in different phases. The basic training alone extends over a year and a half and includes space technology as well as special skills such as robotics and docking maneuvers, as can be read on the ESA website, the European space organization. There the prospective astronauts learn everything important about the ISS systems and learn how to solve problems in space.
In addition to training, the culture also impressed a new partial replica of the lunar landscape, which was set up in the center. This is intended to help the astronauts to practice landing and stationing on the moon, since the moon is planned as a stopover for future missions.future prospects and international cooperation
As part of its initiatives, the Hösel culture group plans to continue the "Technological Trends" series with a visit to the Jülich research center. Exclusive international visits, including at CERN in Geneva, in core fusion research in Itter and at Airbus in Toulouse, are also under discussion.
The topic of space travel is more topical than ever. Recently, the Soyuz MS-26 space travelers, including Americans Don Pettit and Russians such as Alexej Owtschinin, have successfully achieved ISS. Despite international tensions, the cooperation in space travel remains, as the recent developments and the support of the Roskosmos boss show, which supports an extension of the agreement with the United States by 2025. In addition to the everyday challenges, it is currently a test of patience for astronauts Suni Williams and Barry Wilmore, since they have to remain on board for longer than planned due to technical problems.
In this exciting era of space travel and technology, the German Aerospace Center in Cologne-Wahn impressively shows how important it is to go innovative ways and to inspire young talents for science. A visit that not only encourages knowledge, but also the idea of future adventures in space.
For all interested parties who would like to learn more about the training and preparation of the astronauts, a look at the website of the ESA where the demanding training programs are presented in detail. Cologne remains an important player in space research and an important technical location in North Rhine-Westphalia
