Security alert: Police clarify the dangers of motorcycles at the dance fountain!

The Cologne police invite you to an important information event under the motto “Event stops full throttle” in the Tanzbrunnen on Friday, September 26th, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The event takes place parallel to the “Linus Talent Test” and aims to educate the population about the dangers of motorcycling. Chief Police Commissioner Jürgen Berg emphasizes how important this information is for the safety of all road users.

A central element of the event is the presentation of several accident vehicles, including a motorcycle from a fatal accident that occurred in Cologne-Grengel on July 25th. “With this campaign, we want to raise awareness of the dangers of motorcycling and show that safety has priority,” adds Berg. Road safety advisors are available on site to answer questions and provide valuable tips for motorcyclists and general road safety.

Increasing number of accidents in motorcycle traffic

The current traffic accident record for 2024 shows worrying trends. According to the press release from the North Rhine-Westphalia police, there were almost 400 motorcycle accidents in the Cologne area in which motorcyclists were injured; five of them were fatal. The number of fatal accidents is particularly alarming, as seven motorcyclists have already lost their lives in Cologne in 2025. This reflects a nationwide increase as motorcyclists are increasingly involved in accidents. In 2024, 86 motorcyclists died in North Rhine-Westphalia, 28 more than in the previous year, which makes the urgency of educational work at this event clear.

The police recorded a total of around 643,000 traffic accidents in North Rhine-Westphalia - an increase of 2,000 compared to 2023. Even if the number of injured people has fallen overall, the topic of traffic safety remains omnipresent. The main causes of accidents are insufficient safety distance, failure to give way and speeding. Motorcyclists are particularly at risk, as evidenced by the increased number of accidents.

A look at road safety in Germany

In a nationwide context, it can be said that around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were registered in Germany in 2024 - a decrease compared to previous years. Road fatalities fell to 2,770, representing a long-term downward trend, although the slowdown has been noticeable since the 2010s. Nevertheless, the human cause of accidents, particularly lack of attention and recklessness, remains a constant problem for many road users. As part of “Vision Zero”, there should be no more traffic deaths in Europe by 2050, which can only be achieved with responsible behavior and better infrastructure.

The event at the Tanzbrunnen not only offers a place for education, but also a platform to make a positive contribution to traffic safety. Anyone interested, whether motorcyclist or not, should use this opportunity to find out about the dangers of road traffic and take a step towards greater safety themselves.
