Elsdorf receives new primary school – 36 million euros for education!
Something is happening in Elsdorf! An exciting project is just around the corner that is not only intended to bring a breath of fresh air into the education scene, but is also seen as a signal from the city of Cologne to resolutely push forward school development. It is about the planning and construction of a new two-class primary school on Friedensstrasse, which will be equipped with an impressive budget of almost 36 million euros. The Porz district council and the city council have made the necessary decisions to get this project rolling. As the Rundschau Online reports, the project is classified as extremely important, which benefits the districts of Porz, Urbach and Eil, which are currently suffering from the pressure of increasing student numbers.
The Cologne school construction company has taken responsibility for the major project. Not only the school itself is planned, but also a modern double sports hall and an apartment for the caretaker. The construction work is associated with a number of challenges that the planners are not afraid of. For example, underground long-distance gas pipes must be taken into account and the soil that is difficult to seep through must be worked on.
Sustainability in focus
Particular attention is paid to sustainability: planned environmental measures include, among other things, the installation of a photovoltaic system as well as a green roof and numerous tree plantings in the schoolyard area. The school will have space for 220 children and up to 20 employees, and the gymnasium can also be used by local clubs.
The total cost of 36 million euros is not the only project that will be realized in the next few years. At the meeting of the Cologne City Council on July 3, 2025, further school projects were also decided, including the construction of a new wooden modular school at the Catholic secondary school on the Großer Griechenmarkt for around 6.9 million euros and an expansion of the Horststrasse Catholic primary school, which is estimated at 25.64 million euros. As the City of Cologne further reports, investments in Cologne schools are continuously increasing, with a total forecast investment of 62.9 million euros for additional school locations and energy-efficient renovations.
A clear schedule
The plans for the new primary school are already well underway. A building application is being prepared and the competition for general contractor services has just begun. Construction is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2026, with completion targeted for the 2028/29 school year. The investment of 3.3 million euros in the planning phase is a clear indication that high priority is being given here.
In summary, the signs point to progress in Elsdorf, where the need for modern educational offerings is increasingly being recognized. With a coherent concept and clear priorities, the new elementary school is well on its way, and it remains to be seen what positive effects will be on the community structure and school culture in the coming years. The education system in Cologne has literally received a strong push in the right direction!
