Be safer: Cologne's Mobility Action Day on September 27th!

On September 27, 2025, the Neumarkt in Cologne will be the venue for an important day of action in which the Cologne local group of FUSS e.V. will actively participate. As the Rhenish advertising papers reported, the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the support of the city of Cologne, police and KVB. The focus is on drawing attention to the dangers and disabilities that pedestrians are often exposed to.

Unfortunately, the everyday life of many pedestrians in Cologne is often characterized by sidewalks that are too narrow and blocked. At the event, the space requirement for pedestrians will be specifically demonstrated in the form of “walking witnesses”. A tour of the Neumarkt is planned to highlight the urgently needed changes. For example, the sidewalk and cycle path in front of the health department are far too narrow, and the space for pedestrians at the crossings is not sufficiently dimensioned. Urgent improvements are needed here to increase pedestrian safety.

High traffic volume and safety aspects

Another issue that will be addressed on the day of action is excessive traffic density. The crossing over Cäcilienstrasse in particular is simply too narrow for the high volume of traffic, and the central island is far too small. In addition, the duration of the green traffic light phases is often too short to enable older people, parents with small children or people with mobility aids to cross the street safely.

As can be seen from the information from FOOT e.V. As can be seen, there are already comprehensive studies that show that a maximum speed of 30 km/h significantly improves the safety of pedestrians. Statistically fatal accidents often occur at 50 km/h, while at 30 km/h the chances of survival increase. Since 2024, the Road Traffic Act has set clear goals that not only make road traffic more pleasant by limiting speed to 30 km/h, but also promote the environment and health.

Actively shape the transport transition

As a result of the change to the road traffic regulations (StVO), which was decided on July 5, 2024, cities now have greater leeway to more easily introduce 30 km/h speed limits in certain places. These regulations should not only apply to pedestrian crossings, but also to highly frequented school routes and playgrounds. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that such measures can make the urban environment friendlier and at the same time increase the quality of stay.

The Mobility Action Day on September 27th is intended not only to draw attention to the existing problems, but also to provide a platform to discuss the positive effects of Tempo 30 and other necessary measures in urban planning. The participants expect a committed audience who will work together for a safer and more livable city center.
