New residential project in Cologne-Nippes: 75 apartments for everyone!
On June 10, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for an exciting new building project in Cologne-Nippes. The Kölner Wohnungsgenossenschaft eG has started the construction of 75 new apartments in Clouth.Tor 2. This project is particularly important because 44 of the 75 apartments are supported by funds from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city administration has recognized this as an important signal to strengthen social housing in the region and advance neighborhood development, as Markus Greitemann, councilor for planning and building for the city of Cologne, emphasizes.
The new construction project also pays particular attention to the integration of people with disabilities. Two shared apartments will be set up in Clouth.Tor 2, each of which can accommodate four people with intellectual disabilities. Christoph Moossen, CEO of the Kölner Wohnungsgenossenschaft eG, emphasizes the importance of high-quality living space for the quality of life of all residents.
For the community and affordable housing
In total, the project also creates 57 underground parking spaces on a spacious plot of 3,334 m² on Josefine-Clouth-Straße. Thanks to funding from North Rhine-Westphalia, the goal is to offer affordable housing for a broad population group. This is particularly important for households with low incomes, which often suffer from the pressure of the tight housing market in Cologne.
The construction project is part of a larger initiative to promote housing, in which the construction of rental apartments is supported by low-interest loans. This support applies to various forms, such as the creation of new rental apartments and the adaptation of existing apartments to changing needs, explains the city of Cologne. The aim of these measures is to ensure supplies for the resident population and, above all, to bind families, young professionals and employed people to Cologne.
The situation on the Cologne housing market
The availability of apartments in many parts of Cologne is currently very limited. There are currently almost no properties available in the various city districts such as Nippes, Deutz or Höhenberg, which underlines the demand for new forms of living. This situation highlights the need to realize new residential projects like the one in Clouth.Tor 2 in order to meet the housing needs of Cologne citizens in the long term.
The start of construction in Cologne-Nippes sets an example for social and sustainable housing construction that meets the needs of both current and future generations. The path to a living-friendly city remains moving, and projects like this show that good ideas can be implemented at the right time.
