World War II bomb defused in Müngersdorf – Cologne area evacuated!

Things got heated in Cologne-Müngersdorf today when a World War II bomb caused a stir. As the Cologne City Gazette Reportedly, a British ten-hundredweight bomb with a rear impact detonator was discovered in the area of the stadium swimming pool on October 7th. The excitement began at 2 p.m. when the city of Cologne made the discovery public. Just a few hours later, at 5:15 p.m., the Düsseldorf district government's Rhineland explosive ordnance disposal service received the go-ahead for defusing, which was successfully completed around 6 p.m.

What followed was a lively hustle and bustle around the Stadionbad and the nearby Rhein-Energie Stadium. More than 80 employees of the public order office were deployed to limit the danger zone to 500 meters. This included, among other things, the sports university as well as the ASV sports field and the hockey facility of the KHTC Rot-Weiss Cologne. Fortunately, only around ten residents had to be evacuated, making a central contact point unnecessary. Nevertheless, the peace in the district was gone.

Traffic delays and closures

The defusing also had far-reaching consequences for traffic in the west of Cologne. From around 4 p.m., several streets and intersections were closed, including Junkersdorfer Straße, parts of Aachener Straße and Militarringstraße. In addition, the Cologne transport company's buses and trains no longer ran through the affected areas. In particular, light rail line 1 did not stop at the Alter Militärring and Stadium stations, but passed them without stopping.

A spokesman for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service said the danger was averted after the detonator was successfully detonated, which was accompanied by a loud bang. The entire operation went according to plan and there were no attempts to endanger the safety of the citizens WDR reported. It was a small but necessary challenge for the emergency services, which they passed with flying colors.

Today's events in Cologne-Müngersdorf remind us that we must always be on guard, even decades after the end of the Second World War. The bomb was defused successfully and no one was harmed. But memories of the horrors of the past remain - and the danger of unexplained war memories still exists.
