Zieler: From talent forge to FC legend – a circle is closing!
Ron-Robert Zieler is back at 1. FC Köln and this feels like a home game for him. In a recent interview, he explained that he feels like he is re-establishing himself in the club. The FC has noticeably developed since its last stint, which ended in the 2020/21 season, especially in terms of infrastructure. In his eyes, the club is now more massive and larger, a clear contrast to the empty stadiums during the Corona period. Zieler clearly enjoys playing in front of the passionate fans - an experience that always motivates him.
Zieler, who was born in Cologne and took his first steps in football at SCB Viktoria Köln, is no longer unknown. There were many stages to go through between his beginnings and his return. Among other things, he played at Manchester United, where he attracted attention in the youth team and played 22 games for the U18s. His journey finally took him back to the cathedral city via Hannover 96 and Leicester City. He has now played over 500 competitive games and is currently number two in goal at FC.
Experiences and challenges
As vice-captain behind Marvin Schwäbe, Zieler sees his role not only in his own performance, but also in mentoring the young players. “It’s important to pass on my experiences,” said the 34-year-old, who values a harmonious goalkeeping team. Zieler praises the squad composition of sports director Thomas Kessler, who, in his opinion, had a good hand in putting the team together. But Zieler doesn't just see himself challenged on the pitch; He also plans to work in the club's management after his active career.
Next weekend, FC has an exciting cup game against Bayern. Zieler is expecting a highlight game and wants to give it his all. During preparation, he also thought about the talent in the squad. He particularly highlights Said El Mala, whom he describes as a huge talent who needs time and patience to mature. This support is also part of a broader DFB talent development program, which aims to systematically discover and support young players in Germany to provide them with a solid foundation.
A circle closes
For Zieler, returning to 1. FC Köln is more than just a tactical step. “This is a full circle for me,” he says, reflecting on his family’s return to Cologne, which further enriches his life. This family connection and the supportive environment give him the motivation to prove that he also knows how to inspire young players off the pitch.
His time at Manchester United gave him a lot not only in terms of sport but also as a person. Zieler remembers Cristiano Ronaldo, who was a fascinating example of focus and professionalism at the time. Such memories shape the 34-year-old, who today plays for FC with the same dedication and passion.
With such an attitude and his wealth of experience, Ron-Robert Zieler is well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead of him. A competition that links its roots and its future.
