Cologne's salvation during the heat wave: free drinking fountains for everyone!
Cologne is facing a heat wave that promises temperatures of up to 37 degrees. The city is responding to these temperatures with an important offer for its citizens: free drinking water from a total of thirteen wells and numerous refill stations. This was done by t-online.de published. The measures aim to provide the population with sufficient fluids during these hot days.
To make the heat more bearable, a heat portal was created that gives practical tips on how to protect yourself from the heat. The German Weather Service (DWD) has already warned that the 35 degree mark will be exceeded in many parts of Germany. For this reason, the supply of drinking water is even more important, as other regions of Germany have already had to put water rationing into effect in order to guarantee thirsty citizens a minimum supply, such as fr.de reported.
The locations of the free drinking fountains
Particularly interesting are the locations of the drinking water fountains, which are positioned at strategic points in the city. Here is an overview of the locations:
- Zeppelinstraße (Höhe Rewe To Go) – Innenstadt
- Eigelsteintorburg – Altstadt-Nord
- Deutzer Freiheit (Höhe St. Heribert) – Deutz
- Bonner Straße (Höhe Apotheke Zum Goldenen Horn) – Neustadt-Süd
- Subbelrather Straße (Höhe Blücherpark) – Ehrenfeld
- Subbelrather Straße (Höhe Takufeld) – Ehrenfeld
- Jahnwiese (Höhe Adenauer-Weiher) – Lindenthal
- Neuer Sportpark (Höhe Merheimer Straße) – Nippes
- Sportanlage Weichselring (Höhe Skatepark Park Blumenberg) – Blumenberg
- Maternusplatz – Rodenkirchen
- Barcelona-Allee (Höhe Bürgerpark) – Kalk
- Jan-Wellem-Straße (Höhe südlicher Teil des Mülheimer Stadtgartens) – Mülheim
- Bahnhofstraße (Höhe Adler Apotheke) – Porz
These wells, which are operated by RheinEnergie, undergo regular hygiene checks by the health department. The water flowing from the dispensers returns to the natural water cycle, promoting sustainable use. In addition, more than 50 shops in Cologne are part of the refill campaign, which also offer free tap water. These stores can be identified by special stickers that identify the participants in the initiative, as well as by 24rhein.de is highlighted.
A call to save water
While Cologne ensures that citizens can drink enough in this way, there is an alarming picture elsewhere in Germany. Water rationing has already been introduced in many districts, particularly in the south. Citizens are called upon to use water responsibly, whether when watering gardens or washing cars. In some regions, the abstraction of water from surface waters is even prohibited. The DStGB requires additional measures for water regulation in order to ensure fair water supply in the future.
The heat is not just an issue for Cologne, but affects the discussion about water consumption and sustainability across the country. While we rest here comfortably at a cool fountain, we should not lose sight of the big picture and the preservation of our water resources.
