New super speed camera in Cologne: traffic chaos ahead! This is how drivers react!
From Thursday, the Cologne city motorway B55a will have a new “super speed camera”. This measure, which responds to the growing traffic density and the high accident rate in this area, is intended to ensure greater safety on the roads. The speed camera will be installed between the Buchforst exit and the Höhenberg junction in the direction of the Cologne-Ost motorway junction, as t online reported.
The new device will be placed in a green area, directly between the exit and entrance from Frankfurter Straße. It is the result of extensive test controls carried out between April and May. Over 323,900 vehicles were recorded in 14 days, with around 85,400 drivers traveling at speeds of more than 90 km/h. A front runner was even measured at 181 km/h. Such figures clearly show that there is a need for action here, especially since many serious accidents have already occurred at this location.
Safety comes first
The announcement about the speed camera came in June, with the original completion scheduled for the end of September 2025. The speed camera will initially be rented for four years, with a price of 260,000 euros. After this period, the city has the opportunity to decide whether it would like to continue renting the device, return it or even buy it.
Cologne is known for its high traffic density and therefore the need for speed controls. The Cologne.de reports that both the police and the city of Cologne regularly carry out speed measurements. In addition to the new super speed camera, there are numerous other stationary radar systems and mobile flash units that are repeatedly used at various locations. A list of these locations ensures that drivers are always up to date, even though the locations of mobile speed cameras are often not announced in advance to exploit the surprise effect.
Additional exciting information
Despite its high traffic density and the associated challenges, Cologne remains a vibrant metropolis, as the fourth largest city in Germany and the center of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. At this point it should not go unmentioned that traffic light speed cameras are also used, which lead to violations being recorded both when running a red light and when exceeding the speed limit. This shows that the authorities have a good knack for minimizing risk factors in traffic. Current information about speed cameras is not only available online, but also on the radio.
With the new speed camera on the B55a, Cologne drivers can now be careful when driving in this area. After all, safe roads are of utmost importance for all road users.
