Traffic chaos in Cologne: A4 closed from today until the end of September!

There is currently a lot of movement on the motorways in Cologne! The A4 will be completely closed from today, September 17th, until September 30th, 2025 for extensive renovation work. The measure, which was already in the planning stage, is intended to renew the severely damaged road surface between the Cologne-West motorway junction and the Eifeltor junction News.de reported.

The lockdown starts at 10pm today and ends at 9am on September 30th. Drivers should be prepared for increased traffic and occasional traffic jams. During this time, several driving relationships were interrupted. For example, you cannot take the A1 from Dortmund or Koblenz onto the A4 in the direction of Olpe. However, access to the A4 towards Aachen remains possible at the Cologne-Klettenberg junction, as well as to the A4 towards Olpe at the Eifeltor junction.

Detours and recommendations for drivers

Diversions for long-distance traffic will be signposted via the A1 towards Dortmund and the A3 towards Frankfurt. Local diversions for the affected junctions are also planned. Motorists are advised to avoid the area as far as possible to avoid delays. Although these measures are inconvenient, they are necessary because in April 2025, significant defects were discovered in the “Eifeltor” DB crossing structure, which resulted in a new traffic routing. In June 2025, traffic routing was adjusted to better separate cars and trucks, explains the 24Rhine.

The current work is part of a comprehensive renovation offensive for motorways in Germany. In the summer, the federal government approved 1.1 billion euros for Autobahn GmbH in order to quickly advance the necessary renovations Federal Ministry of Finance reported. These investments are not only important for infrastructure, but also for strengthening the economy and securing jobs in construction.

The entire road surface renewal measure will last until October 28, 2027. Until then, further restrictions on traffic can be expected, which will require a certain amount of planning for all road users. So be well prepared and plan your trips accordingly!
