Culture in Deutz: Club commitment is flourishing despite adverse circumstances!

Something is happening in Deutz! The non-profit organization deutz culture has been active for 17 years now and has made it its mission to keep the cultural landscape in the district alive. It is particularly important to the approximately 120 volunteers that everyone can get involved, regardless of origin, age, religion, social status or sexual orientation. Commitment to culture has proven to be an important pillar of our society, and not just in Deutz.

The Latin word “cultura” means “care” or “education”, but in Deutz it primarily stands for the revitalization of the community. The first “Culture Week” started in June 2008 in Café Kram. Since then, the initiative has been continued steadily thanks to the members' own initiative. Dozens of events, from readings to concerts and exhibitions, were organized. This was recently demonstrated by an eight-day, free program with an open-air concert at the swing bridge, which was very popular despite suboptimal weather.

Cultural diversity and networking

The events take place at many different locations in Deutz - be it in the children's and youth center, in the St. Heribert Church or in the popular Café Kram. The culture week not only attracted old friends, but also numerous new faces who wanted to enjoy the cultural offerings.

Commitment to culture is diverse in Germany and has numerous facets. Whether through member associations, cultural associations or support groups of cultural institutions – citizens everywhere actively assume responsibility. This form of engagement has a long tradition and creates the basis for small and large cultural activities that enrich our shared space.

A look into the future

The members of deutzkultur have shown a good knack when it comes to expanding the cultural offerings. Future events will be supported through collaborations with other institutions. An example of this is the network with the “Art Agency Sabine Klement”, which made possible a picture exhibition in the St. Heribert Church. Such projects impressively show how civic engagement can promote art and spirituality.

What is particularly noteworthy is that, according to a study by bkj, cultural engagement in Germany is constantly growing. The area of culture is one of the largest areas of commitment, and the numbers speak for themselves: more and more people are volunteering in the cultural sector, which is crucial for cultural education and social participation.

Strong volunteer work is therefore an indispensable component not only for Deutz, but for society as a whole. It enables facilities to continue to exist and events to be held that strengthen our sense of community and enable cultural participation for all people.
