Cologne gets on the pedals: This is how the city celebrates ten years of city cycling!

Cycling alarm in Cologne: The city is calling for participation in the popular “city cycling” for the tenth time! From theJune 11 to June 30, 2025Cologne residents once again have the opportunity to actively contribute to improving the climate and air quality. The aim of the campaign is to cover as many kilometers as possible by bike, whether alone, in a company team or in a club group. [ksta.de].

“Bicycles play a crucial role in our health and environmental protection,” explains traffic department head Ascan Eger. The city of Cologne encourages everyone – from students to teachers to parents – to take part. Schools in particular are addressed in a special competition, “school cycling”. There are cash prizes for the most active schools and classes in North Rhine-Westphalia. Participation is open to all Cologne residents who live, work, learn or study there. “The more, the better,” is the motto, because climate protection has a limitless impact. stadt-koeln.de

E-bikes as an environmentally friendly alternative

E-bikes are also very welcome for “city cycling” and every route cycled counts – even on vacation or outside the city limits. Although the production of e-bikes has a higher carbon footprint than conventional bicycles, they remain a sustainable alternative to cars and other forms of transport. According to diamantrad.com, the CO2 footprint of a Pedelec is on average 299 kg CO2 equivalents over its life cycle. In comparison, a car with a combustion engine produces around 34,150 kg of CO2 equivalents, which once again underlines the benefits of cycling.

After just 450 km of using an e-bike instead of a car, the CO2 balance of the e-bike battery has already been balanced. E-bikes are also more efficient in operation: they cause between 2 and 5 g of CO2 per passenger kilometer, while cars with combustion engines emit up to 150 g of CO2. This shows how important it is to switch to environmentally friendly mobility.

Supporters and celebrities

Support for the campaign also comes from prominent personalities: Joelina Bognani, Ralf Trippe and Manuel Unger have already committed to cycling all journeys during the campaign period. In doing so, they set an example for sustainable transport and show how much fun and enjoyment cycling can be.

In summary: “City cycling” in Cologne is more than just a competition. It is a sign of a strong sense of community and a contribution to climate protection. Anyone who would like to take part can find all the information on the website www.stadtradeln.de. So get on your saddles and let’s collect kilometers together for better air and the environment!
