Cologne celebrates shopping Sunday: Everything for St. Martin's Mile on November 9th!

Next Sunday, November 9th, 2025, the scheduled shopping Sundays will take place in Cologne, and the anticipation is great! The starting point for the event is the popular oneBraunsfelder Martinsmeile. As news.de reports, the city of Cologne has a legal framework created, which contributes to a reduction in bureaucracy. This means events, street festivals and markets can be planned more easily until 2026. The regulation for shopping Sundays was decided on February 6, 2024, with a maximum number of four Sundays per year being permitted in North Rhine-Westphalia.

But that's not all. A total of 12 additional shopping Sundays have already been set for the coming years until the end of 2026. The city is trying to make the shopping experience more attractive for citizens and visitors. A look at the weather forecast shows that it will be very cloudy in Cologne on Sunday, but will remain dry, with temperatures up to 12°C - ideal conditions for browsing through the shops!

Historical classification and legal context

A quick look at the background perhaps for the history lovers among us: Until the end of the 19th century, it was common for shops to be open 7 days a week. It was not until 1919 that Sunday was legally established as a day of rest. Today's regulation, which allows shopping on Sundays, is a result of the last amendment to the North Rhine-Westphalian Shop Opening Act (LÖG NRW) in 2018. The number of permitted shopping Sundays was also increased from four to eight in order to meet the needs of the economy. In general, sales outlets in North Rhine-Westphalia are allowed to be open on working days from midnight to midnight, while Sundays and public holidays are excluded from the regulation, with certain exceptions. So, dear people of Cologne, plan your weekend! Whether strolling, looking or shopping, November 9th is a good time to visit the shops in Braunsfeld's Martinsmeile. It's going to be a great day, everyone agrees!
