Cologne Arcaden: Who will be the winner in the architecture competition?
The plans for the new building project between the Cologne Arcades and the Bürgerpark are taking shape. On October 28, 2025, a jury made up of technical experts, political representatives, as well as the city of Cologne and the developer Union Investment met for the decisive meeting. The competition for the development of the district, which is now entering the next round, provided an opportunity for discussion. But the jury couldn't choose a clear winner. Instead, three out of four submitted designs remained in the running, with Bläser Jansen Partner GbR from Dortmund having to be eliminated with their “Starke Gassen” concept. The design by New GbR architects, Torsten Becker city planner and the AS+P Albert Speer office remains in the selection Rundschau-online.de reported.
On October 27th, citizens had the opportunity to display the drafts for viewing and provide their feedback. The results of the competition will be presented on October 29th at 6 p.m., with the winning team presenting their design. This represents an important step towards the development plan process, as the winning design will serve as the basis for further planning. Interested citizens can also view the designs from 5:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Cologne Arcaden, between Telekom and Vodafone. Access is via the inner corridor and the “balcony” of the parking garage, as the city of Cologne explains on its website stadt-koeln.de.
The remaining designs in detail
The jury took a closer look at the designs and particularly praised Torsten Becker's work for its urban scale and the generous public spaces. On the other hand, the design by New GbR Architects offers a radical concept in which existing parking garages are raised and new residential and office space is planned along Vietorstrasse and Barcelona-Allee. The AS+P design, however, has similarities to the preliminary study by the Cologne architects Astoc and envisages a twelve-story high point on the park. This creates exciting discussions about the future design of the district Rundschau-online.de.
The Cologne Arcaden is not the only place where people are actively working on the future of the city. The URBANOPHIL.KOELN project is also taking part in the Young Architects Conference 2025, which is intended to promote international exchange between German and Japanese planning offices. Exciting projects and concepts will be presented that could also have an impact on future urban development in Cologne. The exhibitions take place in the Museum of Kyoto and the Japanese Cultural Institute in Cologne urbanophil.koeln.
With these developments, Cologne shows once again how lively the city's events are. Whether new construction projects, urban development competitions or international conferences – the city remains in a state of flux and citizens can be excited about what is to come.
