New stars shine at the cathedral: Cologne celebrate support and culture!

There are always exciting news in Cologne that affect both history and the culture of this fascinating city. Recently there was a solemn event at Cologne Cathedral, which offered some interesting insights into the connection between tradition and modernity. The "star carpet" in front of the north portals was expanded by dramatic six large and 18 small donor stars. These stars bear the names of the generous supporters who contribute to the preservation of the cathedral with their donations. Over 100 guests came to the celebration in the high choir of the cathedral to show the gratitude towards these donors, as [https://www.ksta.de/koeln/koelnerstadt/altstadt-nord/koeln-das-haf-s-stern-vor-dem-auf-sich-1039763) reported.

Monsignor Guido Assmann explained that the names on the new stars often represent nostalgic motivations, be it in the form of gifts for birthdays or to memory of deceased relatives. The Cologne Cathedral Culture Foundation, which launched the project "11,000 stars for Cologne Cathedral", has promoted many projects to preserve the cathedral and its cultural heritage since its foundation 13 years ago. With the new stars, the total number of the stars is now 740. Simone Dudel, the managing director of the cultural foundation, emphasized the great commitment of the citizens for the cathedral in her speech.

cultural projects and digital reconstruction

A particularly high -aligning project that is supported by the donations is the digital reconstruction of the old cathedral. A fascinating fact: Under the impressive Gothic building of today's cathedral, the remains of the old cathedral, a Carolingian pillar basilica, which was built around 800 under Emperor Charlemagne and Archbishop Hildebold. The first archaeological excavations in this area began in 1946, and since then archaeologists have collected many important insights to understand the history of the old cathedral, as [Kölner Dom] (https://www.koelner-dom.de/tuelles/der-alte-dom- digitale-macht-mache-varten-daengerbau-domes- erbar)

A new visualization of the interior is currently being worked on, based on extensive analyzes of the finds and architectural fragments. The reconstruction, which is also based on comparison examples of similar buildings, is made by Dr. Dorothea Hochkirchen and architectural student Konstantin Kruse led, with modern forensic methods being used to create exact 3D models. Cathedral architect Peter Füssenich has expressed his enthusiasm for the new presentation of the results.

A look into the future

The digital interior reconstruction of the old cathedral will be presented on November 2 during the museum night in Cologne. The cathedral excavation is open from 7 p.m. to midnight, the last entry takes place at 11:30 p.m. This innovative presentation will not only bring history to life, but also offer access to valuable cultural knowledge, which only underlines the relevance of the cathedral as a cultural center, as well as Archdiocese of Cologne.

The efforts to maintain and promote cultural projects around Cologne Cathedral impressively show how narrow the past and the present are interwoven. Both the latest donor stars and the digital reconstruction of the old cathedral are living signs for the connection between Cologne with their landmark.
