His breakthrough finally came when he won the German circuit championship in 1971 with the Ford Capri RS auto.news reported.
The Ford Capri with which Mass won his first championship is back in Cologne today. The engine block of the historic racing machine, which embodies a true title holder, found its way back to Germany via a detour. The Rheinlandgarage in Cologne-Ossendorf has acquired this cult object and is currently working on its refurbishment. Founded by Hans Gerd Brauneiser and Thomas Uhles in 2007, the Rheinlandgarage offers technology and support for motorsport enthusiasts from all over Europe. The garage specializes in the care and maintenance of vintage and classic cars as well as exotic cars.
The Rheinlandgarage and its mission

The workshop offers a wide range of services, from inspections to engine overhauls and tuning. Right now, while the Rheinlandgarage is making its preparations for the 2026/2027 season to compete with the Kompressol-Racing team in the German historic circuit championship, the refurbishment of Mass' engine block remains a matter of the heart.
Jochen Mass: A motorsport legend
Mass' impressive career includes not only successes in the circuit championship - he has also proven his talent in Formula 1. He celebrated his only Grand Prix victory at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. In the years that followed, he was one of the drivers who caused a sensation in endurance racing, including world championships and victory in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989. His commitment and successes were undisputed, and his influence on German motorsport remains unforgotten.
Jochen Mass was born in 1946 and came to Formula 1 and endurance racing through the German Circuit Championship. Before retiring from his active career in 1991, he had taken part in numerous races, including over 100 in Formula 1. He was not only a driver, but also a mentor for young talents, such as Michael Schumacher, whom he supported in the Sauber team.
After his last appearance in 1995 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he unfortunately could not achieve the desired result, he remained connected to motorsport in other ways, including as a co-commentator for RTL.
Mass leaves a hole in the hearts of many motorsport lovers and will be remembered not only for his achievements, but also for his passion for cars and his support of young talent. The Rheinlandgarage in Cologne will continue to work to keep his successes alive by honoring the history of the Ford Capri and by extension that of Jochen Mass.
