Drama on the Rhine: Missing person remains missing despite great efforts!

On Thursday afternoon, the Rhine in Cologne became the scene of a dramatic rescue operation. Um 14:30 Uhr meldeten Augenzeugen eine Person, die in Höhe der Bastei im Wasser trieb. The Cologne fire department reacted immediately and sent a large contingent to start the search for the missing man. This operation involved both boats and a helicopter searching the waters from the air, water and shore. Despite all efforts to find the missing man, the fire department had to stop the search after about 50 minutes without results day24 reported.

The circumstances of how the person ended up in the Rhine remain unclear for the time being. According to initial information, the man was spotted about a hundred meters north of the bastion. A first responder who jumped from a ship to help was fortunately able to get to shore on his own. However, despite his courageous rescue operation, he was unable to reach the man. The fire brigade and police continued to search intensively for the missing person and combed several kilometers of the Rhine. Articles of clothing were also found on the bank, although their belonging to the missing person could not be confirmed ksta.

The background to the incident remains obscure. The police have started an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. What is shocking is the fact that such incidents are not isolated cases. According to the DLRG, there were a total of 411 fatal accidents in waterways in Germany in 2023, which means an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. This represents the third consecutive increase in the number of drownings and is the first time since 2019 that the number of drownings has exceeded 400. Ute Vogt, President of the DLRG, hopes to raise people's awareness of the dangers associated with the warm season and plans to make parents of young children in particular aware of these risks DLRG communicates.

It is hoped that such tragic incidents will become less common next summer and that all swimmers and boaters will be made aware of the dangers in the water.
