Bicycle demos in Cologne: Traffic chaos on Sunday with 1,000 bikes!
On Sunday, June 15th, a real spectacle for bicycle lovers will take place in Cologne. Under the motto “Cologne Rally 2025 – Cycling connects – Cologne remains colorful”, committed citizens are organizing ten bicycle demos in the city area. Around 1,000 participants are expected to set off from various parts of the city from 12 p.m., including Porz, Sürth, Meschenich, Weiden, Widdersdorf, Chorweiler, Dellbrück as well as from Leverkusen-Wiesdorf and Hürth. The routes of the bicycle demos all lead to the common meeting point at Heumarkt, where the first meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m. There will be a special highlight for families: The “Kidical Mass” starts at 2 p.m. at Rudolfplatz and offers children and parents the opportunity to also set an example for cycling culture.
Traffic disruptions are inevitable
The police are already warning of severe traffic disruptions and diversions throughout the city. While cyclists move through Cologne, widespread disruption to car traffic is to be expected. The event itself is scheduled to culminate at around 4:30 p.m. with a final rally at Heumarkt, which will make the traffic situation in the center of Cologne even more difficult. koeln.de adds that the cycle routes not only lead through the city, but also run along the beautiful banks of the Rhine.
These actions are part of a larger trend in Germany towards environmentally friendly mobility. Scientists are working intensively on concepts for sustainable mobility in order to achieve a transport transition that is CO2-neutral and socially just. Wupper Institute plans strategies and measures that are intended to understand and promote the interaction between mobility, economy and society. The citizens of Cologne's streets not only overwhelm drivers, but also show how important bike-friendly infrastructure is for the future of our cities.
For all Cologne residents and those interested in cycling, June 15th should be an important day to set an example and raise their own voice for a sustainable transport policy. Anyone traveling in the city should definitely be prepared for waiting cyclists and detours!
