Giant tree falls in front of an apartment block in Cologne: happy ending with no injuries!

On Whit Sunday, June 8, 2025, a violent storm swept over Cologne and caused a dramatic incident on Kalk-Mülheimer-Straße. A large tree fell over there after hours of strong winds with speeds between 70 and 85 km/h. The danger had been announced in advance by an official warning from the German Weather Service (DWD), which was valid for the day of the event. On the overview map of the Severe Weather Center There was already a warning of squalls, which called on citizens to be more careful.

Although the fallen tree did not result in any injuries, the damage to the adjacent block of flats was not insignificant. The windows of the stairwell, a gutter and several roof tiles are affected. In the past, residents had been surprised that the tree, which was already classified as endangered in 2023, had not been trimmed or removed. Now many regret that the property management did not take action to prevent an accident.

Severe weather warnings and precautions

The DWD warning asked citizens to be particularly careful and avoid forest areas, parks and cemeteries. The storm, triggered by the “Poly” depression, not only brought significant risks in Cologne, but also caused devastation in other parts of Germany. In exposed locations, speeds of up to 95 km/h were even measured, which increased the risk.

After the tree fell over, the fire department came to assess the damage. She trimmed the tree but left it there for now. This now means that the entrance to the house is blocked. Residents have to get to their apartments either through the underground car park or over the tree and fence. An unpleasant situation that the property management definitely needs to sort out soon, because it's not easy to get home at the moment.

Given the weather situation, it is important that the city of Cologne and the relevant authorities act quickly to ensure the safety of residents. It is hoped that the fallen tree will be removed promptly to avoid further inconvenience. You can find more information about current weather warnings and developments on the 24Rhein website.
