Motorcyclist races in the construction site area: Serious accident on A 559!

Sunday evening took a tragic turn for a 21-year-old motorcyclist on the A 559 towards Cologne. At around 10 p.m., shortly before the Gremberg motorway junction in the construction site area, a driver of a Suzuki was traveling at excessive speed and got into a serious rear-end collision. The motorcyclist crashed into the rear of a Kia without braking, wearing only a helmet, a T-shirt, shorts and flip flops. While he suffered severe abrasions and had to be taken to a clinic, one of the three occupants of the Kia, also 21 years old, only suffered minor injuries. At the scene of the accident, the police found evidence that the motorcyclist was possibly under the influence of alcohol and ordered a blood test. Traffic Commissioner 2 has asked all witnesses to come forward.

What does this accident tell us about motorcyclist safety? According to ADAC, motorcyclists have a four times higher risk of being involved in an accident and the accident rate is seven times higher than for car drivers. The tragedy can often be seen not only in the numbers, but also in the most common injuries that occur in accidents. Traumatic brain injuries and thoracic injuries are commonplace among motorcyclists. Statistics show that over 500 fatal accidents occur in Germany every year and almost 10,000 motorcyclists are seriously injured.

Statistics and accident analysis

The latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office show that although the number of deaths and serious injuries among motorcyclists has fallen since 2000, their percentage of all traffic fatalities has steadily increased. Young drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 are particularly at risk, as they are affected in almost every fourth accident. Over a third of these accidents are solo accidents, often caused by driving errors or excessive speeds. When it comes to collisions with other road users, overtaking errors and unreasonable speeds are the main causes.

This frightening situation is a reminder of the importance of acting responsibly as a motorcyclist. With this in mind, the ADAC recommends that drivers wear appropriate protective equipment and carry out regular safety checks on their vehicles. But the road infrastructure should also be improved. Measures such as cutting back vegetation could help reduce accidents.

In summary, this event shows once again that there are many dangers lurking on the road, especially for motorcyclists. A strong focus on safety awareness and responsibility could help reduce the accident rate and therefore prevent tragic accidents like those on the A 559 from happening again.
