Release of the KVB Porz Markt stop is delayed again!
The KVB line 7 in Porz is currently causing excitement among passengers. Originally, regular operations were supposed to resume from Monday, but the opening of the Porz Markt stop has now been delayed by a few days. The reason for this is the imminent opening of the new park on Glashüttenstrasse, which is crucial for the completion of the stop. The technical supervisory authority must accept the new systems before everything returns to normal operation. Since August, KVB customers have had to take a bus shuttle to the Steinstrasse stop because the old platform is sagging and is therefore no longer safe. A new replacement platform is expected to be released next Thursday, as Radio Köln reports.
The Cologne transport company has already taken measures to ensure that passengers do not have to wait too long for a solution. Drivers were ordered to go through the regular “Porz Markt” stop and stop at the new interim platform instead. Changing passengers on the replacement platform is now possible, which is to the advantage of travelers as it avoids the detour via the “Rosenhügel” stop. The approval to put the replacement platform into operation was only recently granted, and the aim was of course to implement this interim solution before school started next week, as Stadtwerke Köln explains.
Causes and outlook
For background information: The subsidence of the ground on the platform outside the city in “Porz Markt” is the main cause of the current changes. Unfortunately, the KVB cannot make any statement about the cause or extent of the damage, as it is only a user of the stop. The property lies with the city of Cologne, which has already commissioned a subsoil expert to carry out further investigations. The results of these tests are expected in approximately three weeks. The KVB hopes to receive explanations regarding the resumption of normal operations in a timely manner.
The developments around the Porz Markt stop are part of a larger event in Cologne. The expansion of the light rail network is a central prerequisite for the successful mobility transition in the city. The goal is to encourage more and more people to switch to the train by creating attractive connections and expanding capacities. Since 2022, various projects have been philosophized under the umbrella term “public transport network development”, and the Cologne transport company is working closely with cities and municipalities to sustainably improve the city's mobility, as can be read on City of Cologne.
