An extraordinary incident caused a stir in Cologne. On June 16, 2025, while taking a walk as part of the prison system, a 38-year-old man escaped from a forensic clinic. As WDR reports, the man took the opportunity to disappear from Wasserturmstrasse into an adjacent forest during his release. The man was in custody and, according to the police, was not considered a danger to the public - a circumstance that somewhat alleviated the public's concern.
Successful arrest
After the 38-year-old man was on the run for several days, he was finally found by the police on June 23, 2025 on a park bench in Velbert-Langenberg. As t-online reports, this happened around 3:15 p.m. at Froweinplatz. The man allowed himself to be taken back to the clinic without resistance, which the officers saw as a positive sign.
The search was additionally supported by the publication of two mugshots. The police received much praise for their quick and effective response, which helped to find the man safely.
About the Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry
The forensic psychiatry at the LVR clinics in Gremberghoven, where the man is housed, has six wards and only houses male patients. These patients usually suffer from psychoses, personality disorders or intellectual disability. In Germany there are numerous clinics for forensic psychiatry, as the list on Wikipedia shows, which are intended for the execution of measures.
Overall, it can be said that the man's quick return to the clinic is positive news and underlines the efficiency of the police. However, the incidents also cast a shadow on the way people are treated in prison and whose safety should be the priority, both for themselves and for society.
