Swimming container comes to Elsdorf: Learn to swim in the summer!
That's where swimming comes in! Elsdorf will receive a swimming container at the end of June 2025, which will serve as a practical interim solution while the outdoor pool is renovated. Mayor Andreas Heller announced the good news via Facebook. The container measures an impressive 13 meters in length and 3 meters in width and is primarily used by primary schools to teach little ones how to swim. There are even free swimming courses on offer during the summer holidays!
The city of Elsdorf has tried this initiative in order to maintain the important swimming lessons even while the outdoor pool is closed. The container will remain until early September and could be a real asset to the community. A similar project in Kerpen has already been a great success, where over 60 children took part in water familiarization courses and this shows how valuable such measures are.
Innovative concept for swimming lessons
What is behind this floating container? These small swimming pools are made from converted shipping containers and offer a cost-effective and space-saving alternative to traditional teaching swimming pools. The first containers were used in Germany at the beginning of 2023 and are enjoying growing popularity. A filter system ensures clean water that can be easily drained when changing locations. The containers also have the advantage of being mobile: after completing a course, they can simply move to another school to offer the next swimming lesson there, as goodnews-magazin.de reports.
The variant in Elsdorf is part of a larger initiative launched by the North Rhine-Westphalia state government. This has responded to children's declining ability to move and swim - a development that has been exacerbated by the corona pandemic. State Secretary Andrea Milz presented the plans for mobile floating containers as part of a “swimming offensive” that is anchored in the coalition agreement between the CDU and the Greens. A total of five such containers are intended to cover all administrative districts in North Rhine-Westphalia and thus pursue the goal of increasing the swimming ability of children of preschool and primary school age wdr.de.
The “Narwali” project was launched with a budget of three million euros and aims to promote swimming culture and get as many children as possible used to the water. The first container was put into operation in September 2023, and operations in the Arnsberg district have been running very successfully since mid-May 2024.
Overall, the floating container concept proves to be a real benefit for school education and the development of leisure skills. The initiative in Elsdorf is another step in the right direction to introduce children to the water safely and happily. Now all that’s left is: Get into the water!
