In Cologne, a new speed camera will be put into operation on the B55a in front of the Cologne-Ost motorway junction from Thursday, August 14th. This measure follows a worrying increase in speeding and serious accidents in this section, reports Cologne City Gazette. Between April and May of this year, over 85,000 of around 320,000 vehicles were measured as traveling faster than the permitted 80 km/h - that's around one in four cars. The maximum speed reached an astonishing 181 km/h.
The new system is powered by a fuel cell, as there is no power supply available in the green area between the exit and driveway. The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt approved the system for operation in March, and the costs for the three-year rental period amount to around 260,000 euros.
More safety in road traffic
The city of Cologne and the police always carry out speed checks to increase safety on the roads.
