One name in particular stood out among the participants: Sugarloaf Mountain. The three-year-old stallion, trained by Peter Schiergen, secured victory and thus proved that he is the favorite of the hour.
Sugarloaf entered the race with odds of 3.5:1 and impressively met the audience's expectations. Jockey Andrasch Starke, who has now won the Union race in Cologne six times, steered the stallion with great skill over the 2,200 meter long course. In the end, only one length separated him and second place, occupied by Hochkönig under Nina Baltromei. Abando came third, while Sedano took fourth place. The victories of Zuckerhut and Andrasch Starke are fueling anticipation for the upcoming IDEE 156th German Derby on July 6, 2025 in Hamburg, where Zuckerhut is once again considered the favorite. Deutscher Galopp reports that the jockey won his first Union race with Caitano in 1997.

Race day started promisingly with a race for three-year-olds over 1,400 meters. Here Piu Bella, trained by Andreas Suborics and ridden by Hugo Boutin, achieved the first victory of the day. Ismahane also secured a permanent place in the hearts of the spectators, winning the second race with a narrow nose advantage against Duchess of Lips and Danylov. Ismahane is trained by Marian Falk Weißmeier, another talented trainer who caused a sensation with her horse.
