Cologne happiness fence: 90 meters of art for optimism and community!

On June 28, 2025, a very special art installation by HA Schult was ceremoniously opened in Cologne. The impressive, 90 meter long “GLÜCK” installation adorns the DEVK insurance construction site in Riehl and shows a colorful sequence of images with a total of 25 subjects. These pictures are not just decorative, they also reflect personal moments of happiness from Cologne's urban society. The project thus sets a colorful accent in the gray everyday life of renovation and invites the population to share their own experiences and stories on the topic of happiness. The call for images and texts that Schult initiated via his blog www.glueck-koeln.de received a great response and the submitted contributions form a collective “soul image” on the facade of the building that celebrates the diversity of Cologne's experiences.

The artist himself describes the images shown as a “score” – a multi-part composition that expresses people’s emotions and experiences. This colorful show offers a unique insight into the happy moments that move the city's citizens. “GLÜCK” bundles the ideas, memories and emotions of urban society so that every viewer can identify with the depictions. DEVK board member Annette Hetzenegger emphasizes how much this art installation enriches neighborhood life and spreads optimism.

Action on World Children's Day

Another highlight is already coming: On World Children's Day, September 21st, children are cordially invited to paint their own happy pictures for the upcoming “Happiness” passage on the banks of the Rhine. DEVK supports the event as the main sponsor. A committed exchange between art and community is sought in order to promote social cohesion and further enrich cultural life in Cologne.

The role of art in public space

The project is part of the city of Cologne's comprehensive strategy of using creative urban design as a means of promoting cultural identity and social cohesion. Public art, such as murals and interactive installations, transforms neglected areas into vibrant activity centers and helps enhance urban identity. Current developments show that civic engagement and creative collaboration are critical to creating a sense of belonging and increasing residents' ownership of public artworks. This approach is reflected in the diverse depictions of the “GLÜCK” installation, which show a wide variety of everyday scenes in Cologne and thus strengthen community interaction.

In the coming weeks, the opposite side of the construction fence on Tiergartenstrasse will also be designed with further contributions from Cologne citizens. The “GLÜCK” campaign remains a lively process and offers everyone interested the opportunity to upload their personal texts, photos or drawings to www.glueck-koeln.de. The people of Cologne can become part of this unique, artistic representation and incorporate their stories and moments of happiness.
