Botanical Garden: New display greenhouses will soon open their doors!

The new display greenhouses in the Cologne Botanical Garden are about to open. After an intensive planning and construction phase, the impressive greenhouses were officially accepted in mid-April 2025. The construction supervision ensured that all requirements of the procurement and contract regulations for construction work (VOB) were adhered to, such as rheinische-anzeigenblaetter.de reported. Despite some technical challenges, such as the high water losses in the watercourse and the climatic conditions in the desert house, the reviews by the municipal building industry were consistently positive.

The progress is encouraging: no leaks were found in the water pipes, and the ground near the pool does not show any increased moisture levels. An expert responsible for building technology is currently assessing whether the water losses may be due to natural evaporation. However, the final results of these investigations are still pending. In order to optimize the climatic conditions in the desert house, the experts consider the installation of additional ventilation flaps necessary. The associated tendering and awarding are in full swing and the costs are currently being determined stadt-koeln.de.

The Botanical Garden Experience

As soon as the work on the ventilation flaps is completed, the Botanical Garden plans to open the new display greenhouse to the public. An exact date cannot yet be named, but the opening could take place in September 2025 at the earliest. The new greenhouses offer visitors the opportunity to spend time in different climatic zones, while around 3,800 species of plants from tropical rainforests and deserts are presented in around 2,500 square meters, according to the website of the Botanical Gardens of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

Particular highlights of the botanical gardens are the rainforest house, the fern house, and the desert house, which is known for its impressive water-storing plants. Here you can admire, among other things, the Christ flower and other exotic plants. The Mediterranean House and the Monsoon House complement the collection with frost-sensitive plants and plants from rainy forests.

For lovers of rare plants, a visit to the new display greenhouses will be an unforgettable experience. It will be exciting to see what beauties the Botanical Garden will present after its opening. There is great anticipation and preparations are in full swing. This could mark an exciting chapter in the history of the Cologne Botanical Garden.
