Bauchaos in Cologne: closures and diversions bring traffic to a standstill!

The city of Cologne has announced a number of construction sites for the coming weeks that will not only cause a certain unrest on the streets, but also for various detours and closures. The anticipation of summer could quickly turn into frustration for many Cologne residents if they get into the car. The first work is on the same: The Severinsbrücke in Cologne-Deutz will be closed during the nights from June 29th to 30th and from July 6 to 7, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Such nocturnal restrictions are necessary to process construction work, but also bring inconvenience with them for many commuters.

The KVB line 13 is also affected, which is edited in the area of the “Geldernstraße/Parkgürtel” stop in the picture stick. Work is carried out here between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. during the day, which leads to an alternating blocking of the lanes of the Mauenheim belt. So it remains exciting how traffic will develop during this time.

traffic disruptions through several construction sites

Another important point is the modernization of the traffic light system at the Weidenbruch/Honschaftsstraße intersection in Höhenhaus, which will be tackled from June 30th. During this two-week measure, a mobile traffic light is set up, which of course also leads to restrictions on the walking and bike paths. Such construction site -related changes make it even more annoying to many.

The renovation of the Rhine bank tunnel in the old town/north is certainly one of the greatest challenges. From July 8 to September 26, flood protection facilities are to be renewed here. During the day, a loss of a lane per direction of travel must be expected, and up to two traces are even affected at night. In order to make the situation even more complicated, the tunnel is completely blocked for over six weekends, on Fridays at 9 p.m. to Monday at 6 a.m. Depending on the north-south trip are set up, but this entails additional challenges, especially for the main traffic.

additional construction sites and traffic review

However, these are by no means the only construction sites that Cologne residents can expect in the near future. For example, Aachener Straße in Müngersdorf is affected by August 8th between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. from June 16 to August 8, while Aachener Strasse in Weiden is used until October 31. An overview of other construction sites in Cologne can be found on the city's side, which continuously informs about current traffic measures.

It is important to note that Cologne, as the fourth largest city in Germany and the most populous city in North Rhine-Westphalia, is very badly affected by traffic every day. Over 300,000 commuters come to the city, which is over 40 percent of all employees. For drivers, the dust-loaded routes such as Cologne-Düsseldorf or Cologne-Frankfurt can become a patience test. The city center and especially the airport loop are often affected. The situation will certainly not improve through the continued construction sites.

The summer weather could perhaps make some relief during vacation time, but increased traffic is expected, especially at Cologne-Bonn Airport. Since there are many construction sites that are often planned during the holidays, traffic jams can be even more violent, and you should have solutions for bypass. So if you don't want to be stuck in traffic, you should find out about alternative routes in good time to avoid possible delays.
