Construction site chaos in Cologne: road users have to be patient!

The city of Cologne faces a truly herculean task in the coming weeks: drivers must expect diversions and delays as several intensified construction measures restrict traffic routes. A central point of the construction site is the Severins Bridge, which is being examined as part of the regular main inspection by the city of Cologne. This takes place every six years and requires a temporary closure for vehicle traffic, as Tag24 reports. Next Sunday, June 8th, and June 15th, the bridge must be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The diversions are well signposted on site.

Another important construction project is taking place at the intersection of Humboldtstraße/Königsberger Straße in Cologne-Eil. The traffic lights have been being replaced here since mid-May and the work is scheduled to be completed by July 21st. A portable traffic light system will regulate traffic during construction. The new signaling technology is not only equipped with LEDs, but also offers acoustic signals and elements for visually impaired people, which increases the safety of all road users.

New traffic area in Nippes and Dünnwald

In Nippes, Escher Straße/Am Bilderstöckchen has been being rebuilt since June 4th. New crossings, road dividers and protective lanes for cyclists are being built here so that all road users can move around safely. Completion of this project is targeted for early November 2025.

A lot is also happening on the Zeisbuschweg/Birkenweg in Dünnwald. A new roundabout is being built here. The construction work began on June 2nd and is being carried out in several sections under a complete closure. The work is expected to be completed by April 2026, which will ensure better traffic management in this area.

It is important for all Cologne residents and commuters to regularly find out about current construction sites. The latest information is available in the Cologne traffic calendar, which serves as a central source of information for all traffic disruptions. These measures will improve the infrastructure in Cologne in the long term, even if short-term traffic can be challenging.
