Cologne is finally becoming safer faster: new speed camera installed on the B55a!
Cologne has a new speed camera up its sleeve for the safety of its road users. The city administration is planning to install a fixed speed camera on the B55a city highway, specifically between the Buchforst and Höhenberg junctions. This measure was published in a draft resolution listed in the city's council information system on June 10, 2025. The aim is to respond to the increasing speeding in this area, where numerous traffic accidents have already occurred.
The new speed camera will initially be set up exclusively for traffic heading out of the city in the direction of the Cologne-Ost motorway junction. There is a speed limit of 80 km/h - and as the figures show, this is not important for all drivers. A test conducted from April 29 to May 13, 2025 showed alarming results: almost 324,000 vehicles were monitored, and of those, 85,374 were driving over the speed limit, meaning almost one in four vehicles were speeding. It was particularly violent for one driver who was measured at 181 km/h at the danger point.
Technical innovation and support to the authorities
The new speed camera system should be fully functional by the end of September 2025 at the latest and will use updated technology: It will be powered by a fuel cell, as there is no electricity connection in this area. This innovative approach was first approved in Germany in March 2025 and could soon be used at other critical points such as the Zoo Bridge. The installation of the speed camera is supported not only by the Cologne police, but also by the district government and Straßen.NRW.
Until the permanently installed system starts operating, mobile police checks will be carried out at the same location to monitor speed levels. It is therefore important for Cologne road users to remain vigilant.
Where the speed cameras are set up in Cologne
In addition to the new speed camera, other locations in Cologne will continue to be used for speed checks. The police and the city are also working together to make areas with frequent accidents safer. However, mobile speed cameras are not published so that drivers cannot simply avoid them.
An overview of some of the current locations of the stationary radar systems in Cologne includes, among other things:
- Bilderstöckchen: Escher Straße (Höhe 154 und 146)
- Bocklemünd/Mengenich: Venloer Straße B59, mehrere Abschnitte
- Brück: Brücker Mauspfad (Höhe Autobahnbrücke)
- Chorweiler: Willi-Suth-Allee, in beiden Fahrtrichtungen
- Kalk: Stadtautobahn B55a, Höhe Waldecker Straße
- Holweide: Bergisch Gladbacher Straße, Höhe Steyler Straße
The list of locations is long and covers various parts of the city. In addition to those already mentioned, these also include Deutz, Dellbrück and Lindenthal. The police's mobile speed checks are also a much-noticed part of Cologne's traffic concept, especially in sensitive areas such as schools and retirement homes.
Overall, by introducing the new speed camera and increasing controls, the city of Cologne is focusing on greater traffic safety and a more responsible approach to speed in traffic.
