Cologne is finally faster: New speed camera installed on the B55A!

Buchforst, Deutschland - Cologne has a new flash for the safety of its road users in store. The city administration plans to install a fixed lightning works on the B55A city highway, specifically between the Buchforst and Höhenberg junctions. This measure was published in a draft resolution that was listed on June 10, 2025 in the city information system of the city. This wants to react to the increasing speed overruns in this area, where numerous traffic accidents have already taken place.

The new radar control is initially set up exclusively for the city's fold-out traffic towards Cologne-Ost motorway junction. A speed limit of 80 km/h applies here - and as the numbers show, this is not important for all drivers. A test that was carried out from April 29 to May 13, 2025 showed alarming results: Almost 324,000 vehicles were monitored, and 85,374 drove about the top speed, which means that almost every fourth vehicle was too fast. It became particularly violent for a driver who was measured at the danger point at 181 km/h.

technical innovation and support of the authorities

The new speed camera system should be fully functional by the end of September 2025 at the latest and will use amended technology: it is operated with a fuel cell because there is no power connection in this area. This innovative approach was first approved in Germany in March 2025 and could soon also be used at other neuralgic points such as the zoo bridge. The installation of the speed camera is not only supported by the Cologne police, but also by the district government and street.

Until the permanently installed system takes up your operation, mobile controls are carried out by the police in the same place to monitor the speed level. It is therefore important for the Cologne road users to remain aware.

where the speed cameras are set up in Cologne

In addition to the new speed camera, other locations in Cologne should continue to be used for speed controls. The police and the city also cooperate in order to make areas safer with frequent accidents. However, mobile radar controls are not published so that drivers cannot simply dodge.

An overview of some current locations of the inpatient radar systems in Cologne includes:

  • picture sticks: Escher Straße (height 154 and 146)
  • Bocklemünd/quantity: Venloer Straße B59, several sections
  • Brück: Brücker Mauspfad (Höhe Autobahnbrücke)
  • Chorweiler: Willi-Suth-Allee, in both directions
  • Lime: City Autobahn B55A, Höhe Waldecker Straße
  • Holweide: Bergisch Gladbacher Straße, Höhe Steyler Straße

The list of locations is long and covers various parts of the city. In addition to those already mentioned, this also includes Deutz, Dellbrück and Lindenthal. The mobile speed controls of the police are also a much -noticed part of the Cologne traffic concept, especially in sensitive areas such as schools and old people's homes.

Overall, the city of Cologne relies on more traffic safety through the introduction of the new flash and the reinforcement of the controls on more traffic safety and more responsible use of speed in road traffic.
