Police in Cologne-Kalk: Brazenly stolen – men caught with debit cards!

On July 17, 2025, around 3:40 p.m., police officers in Cologne-Kalk arrested two men aged 41 and 43. The two homeless drug users were in a parking lot on Vorsterstrasse examining and handing out several debit cards. A vigilant police hotspot operation led to this arrest, which gave officers an insight into the criminal activities of the two men. When the 43-year-old was searched, the police found an Apple Watch, an MP3 player and a car key, while his accomplice had a charging cable and cash in euros and US dollars.

The items found on the men came from two broken-in cars in the area. In addition, one of the men was linked to a theft that occurred in June 2025 in which the property of a 49-year-old woman was taken. What is particularly alarming is that one of the debit cards has already been used eight times, which highlights the extent of the theft. This incident falls into a larger context in which crime in Germany has experienced a worrying increase in recent years. The theft figures are also alarming: in 2022 there were around 1.78 million thefts recorded by the police, which represents an increase compared to previous years after a long period of decline. Residential burglaries in particular have increased and North Rhine-Westphalia is the sad leader with over 23,500 cases in 2022, which accounts for over 35% of all residential burglaries in Germany report on Statista.
