It will be exciting for football fans in Cologne in the coming season: On Sunday, August 17th, at 1 p.m., the eagerly awaited duel between SC Paderborn and Viktoria Köln in the first round of the DFB Cup takes place. With a short journey to Paderborn, which only takes a few kilometers, spectators can look forward to a thrilling game in the Höhenberg sports park.
Cologne and Paderborn have only had to compete against each other in competitive games twice in their shared football history, and that was over thirty years ago. Back in the 1994/95 Regionalliga West-Südwest season, Paderborn won their first meeting 3-1, only to lose 2-4 in the second leg. In recent years, however, the two teams have tested more often - there were five encounters in total, with Paderborn retaining the upper hand and winning all of the test games.
New faces and old acquaintances
The premiere of the two trainers will also be particularly exciting. Ralf Kettemann from Paderborn and Marian Wilhelm from Viktoria Köln bring experience from the youth sector and will now take charge of their first DFB Cup game. A special collection of talents will also appear in Viktoria's squad on Sunday, including former Paderborn players Arne Schulz and Marco Pledl. Schulz will act as a substitute keeper, while Pledl has already been in the starting line-up in the games so far this season.
The number of spectators in the Höhenberg sports park is impressive: with a capacity of 8,343 seats, most of the tickets have already been sold. SC Paderborn has so far sold 1,509 tickets in advance, while additional tickets are available at the box office. The stadium is expected to be well filled, which will add to the atmosphere.
Financial incentives and cup history
In the history of the DFB Cup, Viktoria Köln have only reached the second round three times, most recently in the 2023/24 season, while SC Paderborn have already made an appearance in the quarter-finals twice, a feat that was only made possible under coach Steffen Baumgart. It should not be forgotten that the DFB has increased the bonuses for the competition to a proud sum of 75 million euros. Each club already receives 211,886 euros, and there is a further 423,772 euros up for grabs for reaching the second round.
The anticipation for the round of 16, which will take place on December 2nd and 3rd, and the final highlight in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on May 23rd, is therefore even greater. The teams know what is at stake and will give everything to ensure progression.
