KVB separates lines 16 and 17: timetable changes in the south of Cologne!

The traffic conditions in Cologne are currently characterized by extensive construction work at the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB). The focus is on railway lines 16 and 17, particularly in the south of Cologne and in Wesseling. These lines will be separated in the next few weeks and passengers can expect some changes to the timetable.

Disruptions and replacement services for lines 16 and 17

From October 13th to 22nd, lines 16 and 17 will be interrupted due to track work in the south of Cologne and in Wesseling. The reason for these measures is the necessary renewal of the overhead lines between Rodenkirchen and Marienburg. During the work, line 16 coming from the city center will end at the Rodenkirchen Bahnhof stop and trains from Bonn will end at Hersel. An extension of the closure is also planned from October 22nd: then line 16 will end at Ubierring. This means a change for passengers, as a replacement rail service will be set up between Cologne and Bornheim. The replacement bus will initially run between Rodenkirchener Bahnhof and Hersel, then from Ubierring from October 22nd. Ksta reports that line 17 only runs between the Severinstrasse and Bonner Wall stops during this time.

Additional construction work on line 18

It's not just lines 16 and 17 that are affected. In a further expansion project, track construction work will be carried out in the city area on the right bank of the Rhine between June 14 and July 13, 2025, which will also affect line 18. During this time the Berlin line will be shortened; The trains then only run between Thielenbruch and Buchheim Herler Straße, as the section to Mülheim Wiener Platz cannot be used. A replacement bus service will also be set up here, which runs every 10 minutes and serves stops in both directions. T Online informs that the stops will be adapted to the new circumstances.

Detours and other changes

However, the KVB construction work does not only lead to restrictions on the lines mentioned. Other transport connections are also affected. In various parts of the city such as Deutz, Ehrenfeld, Kalk and Chorweiler, passengers have to expect diversions and cancellations. The KVB line 9, for example, is struggling with the renovation of the platform at the “Porzer Straße” stop from October 9th to November 3rd. In addition, numerous bus routes have been rerouted, including routes 106, 121, 125, 127, 130, 132 and 138, some of which have had their stops relocated. The following list shows an overview of the most important changes:

  • KVB-Linie 9: Sanierung an „Porzer Straße“ bis 3. November.
  • KVB-Buslinie 106: Haltestelle „Heumarkt“ verlegt.
  • KVB-Buslinie 121: Haltestelle „Wechselring“ vor Baustelle verlegt.
  • KVB-Buslinie 127: Haltestelle „Hansaring“ verlegt.
  • KVB-Buslinie 150: Umleitungen bis 2. Oktober 2024.
  • KVB-Buslinie 154: Umleitungen bis 30. Oktober.
  • KVB-Buslinie 191: Haltestellen nicht angefahren wegen Kanalsanierung.

The construction work in Cologne is ambitious and aimed at improving the infrastructure. The KVB asks passengers for their understanding and recommends that they find out about the current timetables and diversions in good time. 24rhine states that the information is constantly updated in order to best prepare travelers for the changes.

In the coming weeks, all passengers should use public transport well informed and prepare for the changes. The work is intended to improve the quality of local transport in the long term.
