Arson drama in Wermelskirchen: Ten injured and police on duty!
On the night of Saturday, June 7, 2025, there was a frightening series of fires in Wermelskirchen, which injured ten people and caused numerous other residents to panic. This suspected arson occurred in three apartment buildings, requiring a total of 40 residents to be evacuated. Tragically, some of the injured were taken to local hospitals, while the affected buildings are now considered uninhabitable. According to reporting by the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, the Cologne police have even set up a murder squad to clarify suspicions of attempted murder and to investigate the background to these terrible acts.
The fires occurred on Friedrichstrasse, Oberen Waldstrasse and Telegrafenstrasse. The first fire was reported at 3:50 a.m. in the basement of an apartment building on Friedrichstrasse, but without any victims. At 4:40 a.m. a fire raged on Obere Waldstrasse, completely destroying the attic. Ten people sustained injuries in this incident, three of them seriously. The last fire of the morning occurred at 6:40 a.m. on Telegrafenstrasse, also in the basement area, without any injuries being reported. An alert witness reported that she observed two suspicious men on an e-scooter around 4:15 a.m. They were described as wearing dark clothing and being around 20 to 25 years old.
Investigations and clues
The Cologne police are listening to the population and are asking for information about suspicious people or vehicles near the affected streets. Information can be sent to 0221 229-0 or by email to poststelle.koeln@polizei.nrw.de. The investigation into the cause of the fires and the identity of the possible suspects is ongoing. Reference is also made to a suspected arsonist who was arrested in similar incidents in Wermelskirchen in the summer of 2023. At that time, a series of fires with burning paper containers and garbage cans were recorded, in which the city library also suffered considerable damage and has been in a temporary situation since then, as it was closed for ten weeks, as WDR reports.

The problem of arson does not only concern Wermelskirchen. The figures from the Federal Criminal Police Office make it clear that the number of cases of arson and the creation of a fire hazard recorded by the police in Germany has been increasing for years. A worrying trend can be seen, particularly between 2014 and 2024, which also points to the increasing number of incidents in urban areas.
The sad reality is that many people are put at risk by such attacks and the community suffers severely from such incidents. It is all the more important that citizens remain vigilant and cooperate with the authorities - this is the only way to prevent such devastating acts in the future.
