Escape from the Cologne psychiatric hospital: Police are looking for Abdul Onstein-Karademir!

On Monday evening, June 18, 2025, an escape from a forensic clinic in Cologne shocked the public. 38-year-old Andre Onstein-Karademir escaped from the LVR clinic in Cologne-Porz-Gremberghoven during a supervised walk. The Cologne police are currently looking for the man, who could not be caught even on Tuesday evening. The search was started with a contingent of police helicopters and hundreds, but unfortunately so far without success. However, the police say that he currently poses no danger to the public, which at least provides some reassurance. T-Online reports.

Onstein-Karademir, who was placed in the correctional system by court order because of mental illness, has a striking description. He is between 1.70 and 1.80 meters tall, wears dark blue jeans, a black T-shirt and gray sneakers. Two distinctive scars can also be seen: an L-shaped one on the forearm and one on the left hand. A star-shaped tattoo adorns his upper right arm, while he is described as having slim, brown hair and eyes. Police have already released two mugshots to ask the public for assistance. Witnesses are asked to report any abnormalities immediately, either by phone on 0221 229-0 or by email to poststelle.koeln@polizei.nrw.de.

The penal system and its challenges

A look at the background shows that Onstein-Karademir is under the penal system due to his mental state and reduced culpability. This is an area of the justice system in which criminals are sent to forensic psychiatric clinics due to mental or addictive disorders - in contrast to culpable offenders who end up in correctional facilities. In prison, it is important to prepare patients for possible reintegration into society.

While the system offers some options for relaxing your stay, these are associated with high hurdles. Accompaniment or unaccompanied excursions can be granted under certain conditions. Therapy options and social contacts play a central role here. But not every patient is suitable for these relaxations. This can lead to a high level of uncertainty, particularly in the case of severe personality disorders. Tag24 presents these aspects.

It remains to be seen how long Onstein-Karademir had been in the clinic and under what conditions the escape came about. According to experts, relaxations in the prison system can only take place if there is proven progress in therapy, which raises the question of how acceptable the situation is for the clinic and society. Klinikum Weißenhof offers detailed information on this.

Citizens are urged to remain calm and to contact the police directly if they see the fugitive. Safety comes first, even if the circumstances of this escape are disturbing.
