74-year-old seriously injured at the railway crossing in Engelskirchen!

A serious accident occurred on October 26, 2025 at around 2:38 p.m. at the level crossing in Ehreshoven, Engelskirchen. A 74-year-old man from the region stepped onto the tracks while the barriers were already lowered. Tragically, he was hit by an approaching train and suffered serious injuries. Immediately after the incident, he was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he is receiving medical care. The accident meant that state road 136 and the regional railway line were closed during the rescue and recovery work.

What is particularly bitter is that such incidents are unfortunately not rare. According to a current study, over 68% of traffic accidents with personal injuries in 2023 were caused by older people (65 years of age and older), with the proportion rising to 76.7% among those over 75 years of age. These figures highlight the dangers that older people are exposed to on the roads, especially as unprotected pedestrians. In 2023, around 53,093 people in this age group had accidents, 1,071 of whom died, which shows how high the risk of serious injuries is.

Reactions and support

After the incident, a large number of emergency services were on site. A large number of firefighters, rescue services and police were present to care for the injured man and regulate the traffic situation. An emergency chaplain also offered support to the train driver and passengers who had to witness the traumatic event. The Oberbergischer Kreis accident investigation team helped the federal police deal with the incident.

The operations at the scene of the accident made it clear how important quick reactions and good crisis management are. In order to enable quick and safe processing, traffic was rerouted while the rescuers carried out their work. Anyone who has further questions about the incident can contact the Oberbergischer Kreis police authority on 02261 8199-3333 or by email at leitstelle.gummersbach@polizei.nrw.de.

Such events are another reminder for all road users to be particularly careful. Given the increasing number of accidents among older people, there is an urgent need to increase safety and education among the public. Everyone has a responsibility to avoid such tragic accidents in the future.
