Cologne-Nippes conquers children's hearts with a new 1.1 million euro playground!
In the heart of Cologne-Nippes, Johannes-Giesberts-Park has been transformed into a true paradise for young explorers. A new playground was opened here on July 11, 2025, setting new standards not only financially but also in terms of attractiveness with an investment of 1.1 million euros (some sources even speak of 1.75 million euros). In addition to the construction costs, the city placed particular emphasis on the participation of children and young people in the planning. This is reflected in the playground concept, which offers a variety of age-appropriate play options.
An absolute highlight is the Skywalk, an impressive climbing facility that reaches heights of up to five meters. Here children can not only put their climbing skills to the test, but also enjoy the view over the park. The facility offers different levels of difficulty, crossings, bridges and platforms that were designed for both smaller and larger daring people. For smaller visitors, there are also simple climbing levels and sand play opportunities, so that the younger ones don't miss out. A look at the equipment shows that the opening of the playground shortly before the summer holidays could hardly have been timed better.
Diverse play options
The equipment includes a wide range of play equipment: from a swing set with a bird's nest, two double swings and a four-seater swing to a hanging carousel and an in-ground trampoline. Particular attention was also paid to fitness equipment for street workouts as well as modern table tennis tables that invite every visitor to play.
The redesign of the playground was not only a response to the need for high-quality leisure opportunities for children and young people, but was also based on a council resolution of October 26, 2023. A construction project that started in September 2024 has thus been successfully completed. From now on, the focus is on having fun playing and trying things out.
Planning wisely
In the context of planning, it is important to note that developing a playground requires time and thoughtful design. How Kompan As noted, hasty construction of playgrounds can lead to problems with usage behavior. To ensure that the different age groups are catered for, we recommend planning that begins at least 3-6 months before the opening in order to have enough time for a well-thought-out concept. In this way, different areas can be designed for different age groups that differ in their needs and playing habits.
With the new playground in Johannes-Giesberts-Park, Cologne-Nippes is taking an important step in the right direction. Whether climbing, swinging or just playing with friends – there are a variety of options available to all age groups. It remains to be hoped that the Skywalk and the other offerings will be well received by guests young and old and that this playground will become a popular meeting place for the entire neighborhood.
