50 years of GGS Riphahnstrasse: School history and diversity celebrated in Seeberg!

The school festival at GGS Riphahnstrasse in Cologne-Seeberg was a real festival of joy, as the school celebrated its 50th anniversary in a fitting way. On June 2, 2025, the students beamed with all their might when they presented a colorful stage program and even wrote their own speech. It not only looked at the existence of half a century, but also at the impressive changes in teaching - from the good old chalkboards to modern smartboards. The headmistress Gudrun Schlichte particularly emphasized the diversity and the high proportion of students with foreign roots who go to school at GGS Riphahnstrasse.

The festival was accompanied by a special musical highlight, as the band Aluis ensured a good atmosphere. The historic career of GGS Riphahnstrasse, which has been teaching since the 1974/75 school year, underlines the rapid development of the school. At times it was the largest school in Cologne and is now known for its commitment against racism. The school proudly bears the title “School without Racism” and was actively represented in a demonstration on the International Day Against Racism in 2022.

Tradition and change

The school, designed by Cologne architect Paul Böhm, has changed significantly over the years. From the challenges of renovation work that forced the school into containers in 2013 and 2014, to the return to the renovated building in 2015 with enough space for the open all-day school and a new school garden, which has been used for the specialist subjects since 2017. Such pragmatic decisions are part of a vibrant and constantly evolving school tradition.

If you would like to know more about the school's current developments, you can find numerous information, pictures and insights into school life on the official GGS Riphahnstrasse website. The headmistress welcomes not only children and parents, but also guests who are interested in the school community.

A look back into the school's history

Viewed in a larger context, the history of GGS Riphahnstrasse also shows the development of school education in Germany. The comprehensive presentation of German school history, as recorded in the publication “School History in Germany”, offers interesting insights into the historically grown structures of the education system. This includes school policy in the context of the state, churches and parties. New research published in 2023 expands our understanding of developments in education since the turn of the century.

The GGS Riphahnstrasse is therefore not only a place of learning, but also reflects changes and challenges that make up the overall picture of German school history. This combination of tradition and modernity makes the school a special place that will continue to play an important role in the region's educational process over the next 50 years.
