The Innere Kanalstrasse” bus stop is renamed Ehrenfeld Vocational College”!

Exciting news from Ehrenfeld: The “Innere Kanalstrasse” bus stop will be renamed and will in future be called “Berufskolleg Ehrenfeld”. This step is not just a local renaming, but a long overdue adjustment to the circumstances, which is primarily intended to benefit the over 2,700 students of the vocational college. As the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reports, the BKE school community made this suggestion in a citizen's submission, as the stop is located directly in front of the main entrance to the vocational college.

Claudia Wachendorf, the acting deputy head of the school, presented the application to the district representatives and was able to receive unanimous support. The renaming will not only ensure greater visibility of the BKE in the district, but will also make orientation much easier for students, many of whom are from refugee families in special education classes.

A school commitment that inspires

The BKE is not only a place for learning, but also an active part of the community. It sponsors stumbling blocks and is involved in regional traditional events. Teacher Markus Sick-Ewers explains that a name change could even attract new students. This is not only a practical step, but also a sign of a responsive and inclusive school culture.

The Cologne Transport Company (KVB) has already signaled that it supports the proposal and plans to officially rename the stop when the timetable changes in December 2026. The addition of “Berufskolleg Ehrenfeld” was added to the stop announcement in advance in order to make the change known before the official renaming.

An increase in reputation

It is exciting to observe how the public perception of educational institutions is developing. The request for a renaming is based on similar successful examples, such as the “Deutz Technical University” and the “Hildegardis Hospital”. What a positive sign for school development in Ehrenfeld when the voices of the school community are heard and implemented!

Overall, this initiative shows that the BKE not only cares about a wide range of educational opportunities, but also plays an important role in the social fabric of the district. It remains to be seen how this step will affect the number of new students. But what is certain is that the new name will be warmly welcomed and will enormously promote student orientation.
