Adenauer School of Government starts in Cologne – A new era for politics!

Big things are happening in Cologne: The University of Cologne has launched the Adenauer School of Government (ASG). This important institution, named after the first German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, is intended to play a leading role in the field of public policy, governance and administrative sciences. With the support of the Alfred Landecker Foundation, whose cooperation agreement was signed on June 5, 2025, the ASG will be provided with an annual budget of a whopping ten million euros from the start. The university is thus taking a big step towards leading international research.

Professor Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, the university's rector, sees the ASG as an opportunity to promote innovative teaching concepts and advance science-based governance in Germany and beyond. Dr. Peter Harf, chairman of the Alfred Landecker Foundation, underlined the significance of this institution and its important role in the education system at the founding event. “Science-based governance is more important now than ever,” said Harf.

The structure and goals of the ASG

Under the direction of Professor Dr. Axel Ockenfels, a recognized expert in the field of economics, the ASG is being expanded into a central scientific institution. A central component of the planned program are the study and research activities, which focus not only on German but also on international issues.

The relevance of this educational institution is also highlighted by Science Minister Ina Brandes: She emphasizes how important the ASG is for training future leaders in the public sector. In times when political and social challenges are the order of the day, sound training for decision-makers is becoming increasingly urgent.

Academic program and collaboration

The founding of the ASG is not just a local event, but is linked to other academic initiatives, such as the Alfred Landecker Professorship of Values and Public Policy at the University of Oxford. This professorship examines the values and institutions that underpin democratic societies and is dedicated to the persecution and protection of minorities in Europe. The Alfred Landecker Memorial Lecture takes place annually on International Day in memory of the victims of National Socialism, which underlines the connection to social issues.

The education system in Germany is interested in constant development beyond the ASG. Programs such as the bachelor's degree programs at various universities, including the University of Passau, are designed to offer prospective students a sound education in political science. This includes various module areas, ranging from the basics of political science to internships at home or abroad - optimal preparation for future experts in the field of governance.

In summary, it can be said that the Adenauer School of Government in Cologne not only opens a new chapter for the university, but also sets the course for future-oriented training in the field of public administration. With strong partners at its side and a clear focus on international cooperation, the ASG can act as a role model in the German educational landscape.
