Weather warning! NRW 3x3 tour starts in Cologne - teams on alert!
It finally starts on Saturday, June 14, 2025: The 31st edition of the NRW 3×3 Tour of Street Basketballers is underway. From 11 a.m. to around 5 p.m., the Media Park in Cologne will be the venue for exciting games and fast-paced action. 161 teams have already registered and only a few places are available. The anticipation is great, but the weather forecasts cast a shadow over the start. Georg Kleine from the West German Basketball Association (WBV) is worried that rain or thunderstorms could make the ground unplayable. In order to be prepared for all eventualities, the WBV is planning a plan B: In the event of bad weather, the event should be moved to the RheinStars basketball campus in Bickendorf. The WBV is definitely aware of the weather situation, as the tour lasts three weeks and takes you through 16 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia.
After 14 preliminary round tournaments, the grand finale will take place on July 6th at Campus Vest in Recklinghausen. Since the NRW Tour was initiated in 1994, over 40,000 teams with more than 160,000 children and young people have taken part. The WBV also describes the event as the largest popular basketball event in Germany. Participation is uncomplicated for participants: you need at least three players; membership in a club is not necessary. A particularly large number of school teams are taking part, which underlines the importance of the event for young people.
Growing enthusiasm for basketball
Enthusiasm for basketball has experienced a real upswing in recent years - especially after the German teams' impressive World Cup and Olympic victories. The halls are well attended and the fans particularly like to show off in old tour shirts. The participation fee of 20 euros per team includes a tour T-shirt, which further increases enthusiasm for the event. In the anniversary year of 2024, an average of 105 teams per location and a total of over 6,700 participants took part in the tour. This is a clear sign of the popularity of the event, which this year once again focuses on the different age groups with eleven game classes from U 9 to women's/men's level A.
There is a special opportunity for schools to get involved. If five teams register, they will receive a ball package with ten basketballs, which provides additional motivation for the schools to form teams and take part in the NRW 3×3 Tour. In addition, visitors can look forward to a mixture of sporting entertainment and show acts, which are intended to liven up the event and create a great atmosphere. Information about the tour can also be found on the Ministry of Education's website.
The NRW 3×3 Tour promises to be a sporting highlight for all basketball enthusiasts. While the omens regarding the weather remain uncertain, the anticipation for exciting duels and unforgettable experiences remains. The best thing to do is to bring your friends with you and experience the atmosphere on the playing fields for yourself. Be there – maybe the weather will turn into a great basketball festival!
