Cologne-Porz: New guidance system room for the blind opens around St. Josef!

Cologne-Porz will soon shine in new splendor: an inviting public space is being created around the St. Josef Church and Friedrich-Ebert-Platz that is not only pleasing to the eye, but also takes the needs of all citizens into account. The city planners chose an innovative system: the BIRCOsir drainage system. This solution combined ingenuity with a clear goal – the integration of a standard-compliant guidance system for the blind.

The special thing about BIRCOsir is the intelligent connection of drainage and guidance system for the blind. In this way, those responsible not only save costs, but also ensure that the external design of the square is not disturbed. The sidewalks and bus stops will be equipped with tactile and high-contrast panels that will specifically guide the visually impaired and blind.

Rain protection and accessibility

The BIRCOsir NW 200 AS gutter system creates an increase in efficiency in the area of rainwater management. The blind guide covers on the surface not only act as a practical orientation aid, but also help to create an inclusive urban environment. These covers are certified according to strict standards, more specifically DIN 18040-3 and DIN 32975, which ensures their eligibility.

The gutter elements are extremely durable, made from pressure-resistant, long-lasting C 40/50 concrete and winterproof. Their anti-floating feature also ensures that they do not sway in heavy rain. Accessibility is further promoted by the optional design of the covers, which range from gratings to colored cast covers.

Easy installation and great variety

Another advantage of the BIRCOsir system is its uncomplicated installation: it only requires a load-bearing concrete foundation without a side border. The securely screwed guide covers for the blind are also slip-resistant (class R10/V10) and are therefore a valuable addition to safety in public spaces. Last but not least, the entire system is also designed for heavy-duty applications and can withstand the stresses of the daily conveyor system, e.g. delivery traffic and garbage collection.

In summary, it shows that Cologne-Porz is on a promising path to creating a citizen-friendly and inclusive infrastructure. The combination of aesthetic design and functional safety requirements makes this initiative a real model for other districts and communities.
