Sundwig fire fighting group plants pear tree: A sign for climate protection!
Sustainability and climate protection are currently on everyone's lips, and the fire departments in Germany are showing how you can actively contribute. The Sundwig fire fighting group of the Hemer Volunteer Fire Department enthusiastically took part in the nationwide fire department tree planting challenge. They planted a pear tree at the tool shed to set an example for responsible environmental protection. This campaign was initiated by the partner fire department from Güby in Schleswig-Holstein, which nominated them lokalkompass.de reports that ....
“We have a responsibility for the environment, and the fire departments should also stand for sustainability,” said fire department leader Thomas Averhage. This idea is also shared by many other fire departments throughout Germany. In fact, it is said that over 80 fire departments in the Traunstein district alone are currently taking part in this challenge lfv-bayern.de reports that....
The challenge at a glance
The tree planting challenge has spread like wildfire across social media. Nominated fire departments must plant a tree within a few days to avoid a “penalty.” This usually consists of an invitation to a barbecue evening - a very tasty motivation! The pear tree was planted with much joy in Hemer, and the fire fighting group is pleased to nominate the Garbeck fire brigade from the Balve fire brigade, the Oerie fire brigade from the Pattensen fire brigade and the Holweide fire brigade from the Cologne fire brigade to take part.
Similar actions are also taking place in other parts of Germany. The Varel fire department, for example, planted a tree on the site of a weaving mill. The tree was also transported professionally in a sling [nwzonline.de reports that...](https://www.nwzonline.de/friesland/baumpflanzen-challenge-feuerwehr-varel- Nimm-chausfordm-an_a_4,2,1303084479.html). This type of operation not only demands resources, but also creates a strong sense of community among firefighters.
Commitment to the environment
The commitment that our fire departments show here goes far beyond emergency assistance. They are actively committed to protecting their homeland and the climate, says district fire officer Christof Grundner from Traunstein. Trees are not only important for our environment, they also create living space and help improve air quality. Every specimen planted is a small contribution to a larger whole.
This campaign not only plants a tree, but also shines a light on the indispensable role that fire departments play in our society - at a time when climate protection is more urgent than ever. It will be interesting to see what the next planting campaigns bring and which fire departments will be challenged next!
