Unknown man harasses jogger in Augsburg – police are looking for witnesses!

Yesterday evening there was a worrying incident in Augsburg. A 54-year-old jogger was harassed by an unknown man on Berliner Allee around 9:10 p.m. The perpetrator crept up to the woman and touched her buttocks before fleeing on a black bicycle towards Lechhauser Straße. Despite the police being alerted immediately, the search was initially unsuccessful and the officers are now investigating sexual harassment. The Augsburg East police are asking the public for help and would like information about the man they are looking for, who is described as around 20 years old, slim and with dark hair. He was wearing a dark sweater with white lettering, reports said Tixio.

But this incident is not the first of its kind in Augsburg. On January 20th of this year, a 17-year-old passenger experienced a similar unpleasant situation on a tram. The dark-skinned man, wearing black sweatpants and a jacket, had asked her for something he could buy from her and patted her on the thigh. In this case too, the injured party filed a complaint and the police are investigating sexual harassment. The Augsburg South police station has launched a call for witnesses and is asking for relevant information on 0821/323-2710 and via the press office of the Schwaben Nord police headquarters on 0821 323 - 1013/-1014/-1015 or via email to pp-swn.pressestelle@polizei.bayern.de, like that Press portal reported.

Increasing numbers of sexual crimes

The growing number of cases of sexual harassment is a worrying phenomenon that does not only affect Augsburg. The number of recorded sexual crimes in Germany has been rising continuously for years. A peak of around 128,000 cases was reached in 2024, according to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). This increase is attributed in part to increased sensitivity and willingness to report. However, many victims, often young women between the ages of 14 and 20, are often too traumatized or intimidated to report such incidents and fear being blamed.

Women are particularly affected, as around 91 percent of victims of sexual crimes are female. This high number can be seen as an expression of gender-based violence against women that needs to be combated. A profound rethink is required in order to push back traditional ideas of power and a supposed right to instinctual satisfaction. Because the social pressure and the need to disclose such acts do not only lie with the victims, but are a challenge for society as a whole, as shown Statista is held.
